From the March 4, 1927 Jerico Springs Optic

“The Jerico State Bank, D. L. Long & Co. General Merchandise Store, E. D. Whitehorn’s barber shop and the Masonic Hall was destroyed by fire between 11:30 and 12 Tuesday night March 1st.
“Frank McClendon, who lives across the street, smelled smoke and woke his wife up and she looked out the window and seen the blaze coming out of the window and door adjoining the Mason Hall on the east side. They gave the alarm and it wasn’t long till a crowd of people was there and got out some of Long’s dry goods, clothing and shoes. The bank got out part of their banking fixtures and E. D. Whitehorn saved most of his barber tools and furniture. All the Masons and Eastern Star paraphernalia and furniture were burned.
“The bank and Long carried insurance but the Masons insurance had just run out and they had neglected to renew. Whitehorn carried no insurance on his Barber tools and fixtures. The building where his shop was belonged to the bank.
“The Bucket Brigade worked hard to save D. R. Nott’s barber shop and store just across the alley east of the burning building. We understand Nott carried Insurance on the store but not on the barbershop. For a while, it looked like the whole block would be burned.”
